YOUTH CORNER
The goal of our parish’s youth group is to lead our youth to a deeper relationship with Jesus.
Our Youth group last week was amazing. Our numbers grew to about twelve youths! Since it was movie night, we watched GOD MUST BE DEAD 2. The movie focuses on a high school teacher facing a court case that could end her career, after having answered a student's question about Jesus. AND YES, WE HAD PIZZA!!! We eagerly look forward for next week’s youth group gathering.
After reviewing some of the commandments in the previous weeks, theme of this semester for our youth group is TO THE HIEGHTS. Our focus will be mainly on the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the “source and the summit” of our Catholic faith. But what does this mean? What does this mean to us in our daily life, and what does this mean to the middle school youth that we serve? The semester To the Heights gives in depth explanations of the Mass, exploring why it should be so important in our lives and why the Eucharist is called the “source and the summit” of our faith. The youth will learn not only the different parts of the Mass but also what liturgy is, the symbolism of what we do, and how to properly prepare for Mass and to receive Jesus Christ. This semester utilizes Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as one example of a young man who truly lived his daily life in service to others and in striving to reach the heights of holiness. He died at a young age and was beatified by St. John Paul II in 1990. His motto is the theme of this semester verso l’alto or To the Heights.
Planning in our youth group: Each month, we have two Church nights (learning about some aspect of our church and faith), one Issue Night (we focus on a particular issue facing the youths in our society today and how Jesus is calling us to respond) This semester, we are planning issue nights on bullying, responsible use of technology, peer pressure, forming healthy relationships, obedience to our parents, use vulgar language, etc. We also have a Social Night, which is a night we gather just to have fun as youths, talk and get to know each other, play games, watch a movie, etc. All these are social events that help us to CONNECT with each other and have built a bond with each other. In summary, the four weeks of the month are divided up as follows:
Week 1 and 2: Church (Catechetical Nights
Week 3: Social Night
Week 4: Issue Night.
